So I've not been around much, mainly as we had a) a garage bill problems and b) a wedding venue problem. But this seems to be fuelling the good Karma, because we have news about Harker that should be able to be talked about soon, and more importantly Dan and I got the go ahead for the SHERLOCK HOLMES: THE BAKER STREET IRREGULARS series of books for Franklin Watts / EDGE.
So if you are around, come to the Comic Village and say hi!
So this weekend at the Bristol Comic Expo, the 2010 Eagle Award Nominations were announced. These are the nominations from 2009 that have been voted for over the last few months, with the highest five for each category going on to the final 'Voting Process'. And this year I've been honoured to find several of my books be nominated, as well as a surprise 'Favourite Writer' nomination appearing. Although I feel like Nick Clegg against Cameron / Brown when I see the other four nominees - Geoff Johns, Warren Ellis, Alan Moore and John Wagner - I'm considering continuing the Clegg metaphor and creating a 'rainbow ring alliance' with Geoff to see off the other three.
There are a few things in a writer's life that mean something, something more than just a simple 'well done'. Usually they are in the form of awards and lists, things to be on that cause happiness, things that if you're on the top of, you have even more happiness. As a writer working in the trenches of the industry these lists and awards are often way above my pay grade, but this weekend I was given one of the greatest 'well done's of my career to date, when it was announced that Pride & Prejudice & Zombies: The Graphic Novel is the #1 paperback graphic novel on the New York Times Bestseller List.
It's May, and my months locked away in my study are finally coming to an end with some UK signings and appearances over the next few weeks at conventions and stores in Bristol, Birmingham and London, you lucky things.
So this weekend I mentioned that I had a new desk and my office / study / studio / call it what you will was pretty much sorted. And a few people twittered me saying that I should take photos. And this reminded me of back in 2006 when I did a Studio Tour for Jonah Weiland and Comic Book Resources. Of course, that was four years ago and things have changed - for a start the one in 2006 was actually my bedroom, as at the time I lived in a shared house. But now I live with my Fiancée Tracy, and I have a library / study that I can call my own. And so I thought it would be fun to have a look at what my current studio looks like.
I've been a little rubbish recently on the posting side, but I've decided, especially after the most recent release of Pride & Prejudice & Zombies: The GN to try harder. And of course I'm learning how to do this from an iPhone. So you have been warned.
Dear All, last year's Hurricane Who convention in Florida was one of the highlights of my convention year, and I was more than happy to agree to return for the 2010 convention in October. I class Jarrod Cooper, the convention organiser as a friend and was very much looking forwards to it.
I've had a few people ask me recently how I write, and resisting the urge to reply 'with crayons, a claw hammer and the screams of virgins', I actually had to think about this one - because as the years progress, I've changed the way I work on an almost yearly basis. I've gone forwards and backwards between technology and 'old school' techniques, and I realised that it might be a little fun to see how I've changed since the early days.
I'm a massive fan of Doctor Who. I have been all my life. When I was ten, I used to make my own Doctor Who fanzine called 'K9' by re-typing up articles of Doctor Who from papers and putting it all together on a sheet of A4 which I then photocopied for my readers. Who were pretty much my Mum and a couple of loyal friends. And of course these days I write Doctor Who, albeit the critically acclaimed and lauded series for IDW rather than the show itself, and so I'm naturally going to be watching the new season of Doctor Who starring Matt Smith as the Eleventh Doctor, which started yesterday.
